MFAT is an orthobiologic procedure that uses a small sample of your own adipose tissue. The tissue is minimally processed in a closed system and placed into a joint or soft-tissue target under ultrasound guidance. Adipose tissue is a structural cushion as well as a source of signaling cells. It is one of the autologous options we discuss when joint cushioning and a longer-acting biologic are both goals.

How does it work?
A small amount of fat is taken under local anesthesia, usually from the flank or abdomen, then gently sized so it can be injected. Processing does not culture or expand cells. MFAT is your tissue, returned to you the same day. It is not a donor or birth-tissue product.

Often Considered For:
  • Knee, hip, and shoulder osteoarthritis
  • Joints where cushioning and biologic signaling are both relevant
  • Selected tendon and soft-tissue problems after simpler care has fallen short
  • Patients comparing MFAT with PRP or BMAC who want a same-day autologous procedure

What Should I Expect?
Consultation covers diagnosis, imaging, medications to hold, and whether MFAT, PRP, BMAC, or a non-injection plan fits better. Procedure day includes the adipose collection, processing, and ultrasound-guided placement. Bruising at the collection site is common. Activity is limited for a short period, then progressed. Results vary. MFAT supports the healing environment; it does not rebuild a joint.
